If you’ve been experiencing jaw pain, tooth sensitivity, headaches or worn teeth, it could be a sign that you’re grinding or clenching your teeth — often unconsciously during sleep. This condition, known as bruxism, is more common than most people realise.
At Roseville Dental, we offer custom-made occlusal guards: small, removable appliances that fit comfortably over your upper or lower teeth. They prevent the harmful effects of grinding and clenching while easing symptoms like jaw tension, headaches, tooth wear and fractured fillings — and can improve the function of your bite and reduce strain on your jaw joints (TMJ).
Why patients choose occlusal guards at Roseville Dental:
Because bruxism usually happens during sleep, many patients have no idea they’re doing it — the clues show up elsewhere. Common signs include waking with a dull headache or aching jaw, unexplained tooth sensitivity, flattened or chipped teeth, broken fillings, and a partner mentioning grinding noises at night.
Stress, disrupted sleep and bite problems can all play a part, and grinding often gets worse during busy or difficult periods of life. Left unchecked, it can cause significant, costly damage to otherwise healthy teeth.
The good news: protecting your teeth is simple. At your assessment, your dentist will examine the wear patterns on your teeth, talk through your symptoms, and recommend the right type of guard for the severity of your bruxism.
Ideal for mild bruxism, soft guards are flexible and easy to wear. They provide a comfortable solution to help protect your teeth during times of stress or disrupted sleep — often the first step for patients new to wearing a guard.
Designed for moderate bruxism, dual laminate guards combine a soft inner layer for comfort with a harder outer shell for durability. They offer robust protection while still being comfortable enough to wear overnight, every night.
Made from durable acrylic and custom-fitted to your bite, the Michigan splint is ideal for more severe bruxism. It provides the highest level of protection and is crafted precisely for long-term use — the gold standard for serious grinders.
A specialised splint designed to treat not only bruxism but also muscle imbalances and jaw joint (TMJ) issues. If your symptoms go beyond grinding — clicking, restricted movement or persistent jaw pain — a B-splint may be the right solution for you.
A custom guard is simpler to get than most patients expect — here’s how it works.
1. Assessment — Your dentist examines your teeth for wear patterns, discusses your symptoms, and confirms whether bruxism is the likely cause.
2. Choosing Your Guard — Based on the severity of your grinding, your dentist recommends the right type — from a soft guard for mild cases to a Michigan splint or B-splint for more complex ones.
3. Impressions or Digital Scan — We take precise impressions of your teeth so your guard fits your bite exactly — no bulky, one-size-fits-all trays.
4. Fitting & Follow-Up — Your custom guard is fitted and adjusted for comfort, with guidance on wearing and caring for it. We review how it’s working at your routine check-ups.
Common signs include waking with headaches or an aching jaw, tooth sensitivity, flattened or chipped teeth, and broken fillings. A partner may also hear grinding sounds. Your dentist can confirm bruxism by examining the wear patterns on your teeth.
It depends on the severity of your bruxism and your symptoms. After an assessment, your dentist will recommend a soft guard for mild cases, a dual laminate guard for moderate grinding, or a hard acrylic Michigan splint or B-splint for severe bruxism or jaw joint issues.
Yes — because your guard is custom-made from precise impressions of your teeth, it fits your bite exactly. Most patients adjust to wearing their guard within a few nights.
Yes. By reducing the strain that grinding and clenching place on your jaw muscles and joints (TMJ), a well-fitted guard can ease jaw tension, morning headaches and related discomfort. Specialised splints like the B-splint are designed specifically for jaw joint issues.
It varies with the type of guard and how heavily you grind. Harder guards generally last longer than soft ones. We check the condition of your guard at your routine examinations and will advise when a replacement is needed.
