If you’ve been experiencing jaw pain, tooth sensitivity, headaches or worn teeth, it could be a sign that you’re grinding or clenching your teeth – often unconsciously during sleep. At Roseville Dental, we offer custom-made occlusal guards to help protect your teeth and relieve the discomfort caused by this condition, also known as bruxism.
Occlusal guards are small, removable appliances that fit comfortably over your upper or lower teeth. They help prevent the harmful effects of grinding and clenching, while also easing associated symptoms such as jaw tension, headaches, tooth wear and fractured fillings. Wearing an occlusal guard can also help improve the function of your bite and reduce the strain on your temporomandibular joints (TMJ).
The type of guard that’s best for you will depend on the severity of your bruxism and the symptoms you’re experiencing. After an assessment, your dentist will recommend one of the following:
Ideal for mild bruxism, these guards are soft, flexible and easy to wear. They provide a comfortable solution to help protect your teeth during times of stress or disrupted sleep.
Designed for moderate bruxism, this type of guard has a soft inner layer and a harder outer shell. It offers durability and protection, while still being comfortable to wear overnight.
Made from durable acrylic, this custom-fitted guard is ideal for more severe cases of bruxism. It provides the highest level of protection and is crafted to fit your bite precisely for long-term use.
A specialised type of splint designed to treat not only bruxism, but also muscle imbalances and jaw joint issues such as TMJ disorders. This guard supports both functional and therapeutic needs.
To keep your appliance clean and long-lasting, follow your dentist’s instructions carefully. Most patients wear their guard at night, or during times of increased stress when clenching may worsen.
After removing your guard, rinse it with cool water – never hot, as heat can distort its shape. Clean gently using a soft toothbrush and liquid soap, avoiding toothpaste, which may scratch the surface. Do not soak the guard in alcohol-based cleaners. Once dry, store your appliance in a clean, ventilated case to prevent moisture and bacteria build-up.
If you suspect you might be clenching or grinding your teeth, book an appointment at Roseville Dental. We’ll assess your symptoms and help you find the right solution to protect your smile and ease your discomfort.
